Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I haven't had one big traumatic experience, can EMDR or IFS therapy still help me?

Yes, absolutely. Many people haven’t experienced a single major traumatic event but have gone through a series of smaller, cumulative experiences that have impacted them over time. This might include repeated experiences of subtle criticism or rejection. Approaches like EMDR and IFS are effective in working with these experiences, helping you process and make sense of how your past may still be impacting you today.

I don't know which experiences from my past have impacted me, is this ok?

Yes, that’s completely okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Part of the process is exploring your experiences together and making sense of what may be affecting you. We can go at your pace, following what feels most relevant, and build understanding together over time.

I don't see my experiences as "traumatic", could EMDR or IFS therapy still help?

Yes. You don’t need to identify your experiences as "traumatic” for EMDR or IFS to be beneficial. These approaches focus less on how significant an experience may seem, and more on how it has impacted you. If something from your past affects your thoughts, emotions, or relationships in anyway in the present, these approaches can help you process it and move forward.

I'm not sure if EMDR or IFS could be helpful, do you offer traditional talking therapy instead?

Yes, I do. While I specialise in EMDR and IFS, I also offer traditional talking therapy. We can tailor sessions to suit what feels most comfortable and helpful for you. I will offer suggestions on what I think could support you, and you can decide what feels right. We can start with a talking approach and, if and when it feels helpful, integrate other approaches.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. Some people come for a shorter period to focus on a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore things more deeply. You may already have a sense of how many sessions you would like, and you’re welcome to share this. We can also discuss your goals in an initial session and regularly review how things are going, so you feel in control of the pace and length of our work together.

How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?

I understand how important the therapeutic relationship is, and the need to feel safe, understood, and supported within this. I offer a complimentary 10-minute initial chat where you can get a sense of how I work and whether you feel comfortable with me. I encourage you to speak with a few different therapists to see who feels like the right fit for you. You’re welcome to take your time deciding and there is no pressure to move forward unless it feels right.
