Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Memories that weren’t fully processed at the time, often because things felt too overwhelming, can influence how you feel, respond, and relate to yourself and others in the present. You may notice yourself reacting strongly to situations now, even though a part of you knows that things have changed or that they are no longer happening.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an established evidence-based therapy. EMDR supports the brain and the body to reprocess memories using bilateral stimulation, such as tapping or eye movements.
As reprocessing happens, the emotional intensity of memories reduces, allowing their impact on everyday life to soften. This leads to less emotional reactivity and a greater sense of choice in how you respond.
EMDR for PTSD
EMDR is a recommended therapy for PTSD and is also effective for a wide range of other emotional difficulties. EMDR is especially helpful when you feel “stuck” in the past or when emotional reactions don’t seem to match the current situation.
EMDR can help even if you don’t feel your experiences were "traumatic". EMDR can support you to process any past experience that feels unresolved or impacts your life in some way.
When can EMDR help?
EMDR can help with many difficulties, including:
Trauma (PTSD and Complex PTSD)
Flashbacks and nightmares
Intrusive memories
